If you have always wanted to try pottery or have been inspired by “The Great Pottery Throwdown” then maybe this is the time to give it a go!
In these mixed ability classes I can teach you a range of basic pottery handbuilding techniques through guided projects or support you in developing your skills as you work on your own ideas. Learning to throw a pot on the wheel is something you can also try as you develop your ability to work with clay.
These are relaxed classes suitable for complete beginners and the more experienced, where your work is only limited by your imagination and the size of the kiln.

Abstract Art for Beginners
Tutor: Jo Lee
Wednesday afternoons 12.45 – 2.45
5 week course starting 18 September
Fee: £40.00
Each week, students will have the opportunity to complete a piece of abstract art, using any
media they wish. If students prefer to only work on one piece of art throughout the course,
they can do so.
Mindfulness art – 10 minutes of free flowing, mind blowing art. Students will draw, paint,
colour what’s in their minds, just to release their tension. This piece can either be used to
develop into their main piece of art or it can be pushed aside.
Main lesson –students will paint an abstract shape eg a circle but will it be a complete circle
or part or bits of a circle? The choice is theirs. Less of the shape shown, the more abstract
the picture will be. Each week’s subject will be different eg wildlife and lettering mixed
among shapes although there may be students who are more comfortable carrying on with
their own tasks, therefore, allowing for all levels of artists.
What is Abstract? This question and answers will have a deeper meaning each lesson, due to
the student’s learning and understanding of their art and subject.
The materials will be entirely up to the students to bring in although the tutor will be
recommending makes and brands.
For the first week bring acrylic paint, paper or canvas (some recycled boards will be
available) and any implements you think may produce interesting effects such as scrubbing
brush, palette knife, spatula, comb, washing up sponge. Experiment!

LINO CUTTING
Tutor: Eleanor Mulinder
Thursday afternoons 1 – 3.30pm
DURATION: 8 weeks, no classes on 24th October or 7th November
Fees: £76.80
This is a 8 week hands-on course where you will learn how to carve and print a multicoloured linocut by hand. You will be guided through the process of designing, carving and printing your own series of reduction prints.
You will learn how to create, carve and print your own multicoloured reduction linocut during this course. In reduction lino the design is produced from one single lino block, layering up the colour each time the lino block is cut. It is an interesting and challenging technique to learn and by the end of the course there will be little left of your lino block. On completion of the course you will have a small edition of your own colourful prints and the knowledge and skills to continue your lino printing journey at home. You may wish to bring some of your own images to work from, however plenty of inspiration will be at hand to help you decide.
About the tutor - Eleanor has been teaching for 30 years and has a BA Honours Degree in Graphic
Design from Glasgow School of Art. She is the joint owner of Wee Bothy Art which she runs with her
daughter Holly. More of their work can be seen at www.weebothyart.com and on Instagram

History in Art Lectures
Tutor: Margaret Mills
Friday afternoons 2.00 – 4.00
5 week course starting 27 September
Fee: £40.00
‘Culture Vultures’ of the Grand Tour and What is Romanticism?
We will consider two aspects of art in the 18th and 19th centuries.
If you were a rich and often aristocratic young man (or occasionally a young woman), the Grand Tour
was on your ‘To Do’ list in the 18th and 19th centuries. Studying art and culture in Europe, and often
bringing back decorative items to display in your house was one way of impressing your friends with
your impeccable taste, and we look at some examples.
We will go on to look at how Romanticist artists used colours and often dramatic themes
emphasising the emotions (particularly the sublime), the feelings, individualism and nature. John
Constable, William Blake and J.M.W. Turner are artists associated with the art of romanticism, and we
consider the movement and its impact.
