‘Culture Vultures’ of the Grand Tour and What is Romanticism?
We will consider two aspects of art in the 18th and 19th centuries.
If you were a rich and often aristocratic young man (or occasionally a young woman), the Grand Tour was on your ‘To Do’ list in the 18th and 19th centuries. Studying art and culture in Europe, and often bringing back decorative items to display in your house was one way of impressing your friends with your impeccable taste, and we look at some examples.
We will go on to look at how Romanticist artists used colours and often dramatic themes emphasising the emotions (particularly the sublime), the feelings, individualism and nature. John Constable, William Blake and J.M.W. Turner are artists associated with the art of romanticism, and we consider the movement and its impact.
